Maharashtra bans sale of loose cigarettes, beedis; becomes first state to do so

Maharashtra bans sale of loose cigarettes, beedis; becomes first state to do so.

The Maharashtra government has banned the sale of unpackaged “loose” cigarettes and beedis, making it the first Indian state to so.Maharashtra currently contributes to around 8-10% of the cigarette sales volumes.

The move is aimed at ensuring that customers see the graphic, public health warnings mandated on cigarette packaging. This has been done because loose cigarettes were sold without packets which carry graphic health warnings meant to educate the public about the harm of smoking.

Studies have shown that a 10% rise in taxes results in 8% drop in the number of smokers.
