Maharashtra has banned the sale of loose cigarettes. ET Now's Vinnie explains the rationale behind this ban. She says that cigarettes have a graphic warning on the packet which relates to the health of a person. When one buys loose cigarettes that warning does not come and hence this was one of the reasons for banning them in Maharashtra.
The number of smokers has increased overall which was a major concern for the health department. This order has been passed and it aims to reduce smoking among the youth. Small vendors will be impacted by this move. She also goes onto explain that a 10% rise in taxes results in an 8% drop in the number of smokers.
