Child Stable After Rescue From Ohio Park Pond, Police Say

A child found in an unresponsive condition in a pond in Painesville, Ohio, on June 12 was in a stable condition after being rescued by police.

The four-year-old boy was rescued by responding officers from the Painesville Police Department at the city’s Recreation Park fishing pond.

The child was reported missing from a family member’s residence just north of the park’s location at 7:40 am, police said. A report of the child in the pond came in at 8:12 am.

Arriving at the scene, Officer Daniel Thompson and Sgt Matthew Tycast observed air bubbles and a silhouette of a small person some 20 feet from the bank. A third officer on scene, Officer Chad Balausky, retrieved a throw rope for safety as the other officers entered the water to attempt rescue.

The child did not appear to be breathing, police said, and Thompson began CPR while Tycast cleared the child’s airways.

“The officers continued lifesaving efforts until Sergeant Tycast observed the child was breathing and moved him to the recovery position to expel excess water from his system,” police said.
