An Indian court on Tuesday refused to allow the reopening of Vedanta's <VDAN.NS> south Indian copper smelter, more than two years after it was closed because of pollution concerns that triggered violent protests. The Tamil Nadu state government ordered the smelter to be closed a week after 13 people died when anti-pollution demonstrations turned violent and police fired at unarmed protesters. The Madras High Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea by the company seeking the smelter's reopening.
VEDL earnings call for the period ending March 31, 2020.
Indian miner Vedanta Ltd on Saturday reported a net loss of 125.2 billion rupees ($1.7 billion) for the fourth quarter of its financial year, compared with a profit of 26.15 billion rupees in the same period a year earlier. The company took a one-time loss of 171.3 billion rupees in the March quarter, mainly due to an impairment of assets at its Oil & Gas business, triggered largely by a fall in crude oil prices following the coronavirus outbreak.
