    Diesel guzzler Indian Railways turns to natural gas to cut cost

    Indian Railways on Thursday signed a preliminary deal with gas firm GAIL (India) Ltd to use natural gas in some of its operations, part of a drive by the world's third biggest oil consumer to gradually shift to cleaner fuels. India is building infrastructure, including pipelines and import facilities, to raise the share of gas in its energy mix to 15 percent in next few years from the current level of about 6.5 percent. Using natural gas will be about 25 percent cheaper than the alternative fuels used by the railways at workshops and production units, said Ashwani Lohani, chairman of Indian Railways' board.

    The launch of an online portal by GAIL (India), allowing third-party access to its natural gas pipeline network, would ensure transparency and permit companies to understand the infrastructure further, analysts said on Tuesday. GAIL, India's biggest gas marketing and trading firm, launched an online portal on Monday for companies to book natural gas pipeline capacity. The state-run utility, which operates more than 11,400 kilometres of natural gas pipelines across various parts of India, has been providing third-party access to natural gas pipelines since 2004.

    Essar Oilfields wins drilling contract from GAIL

    Mumbai, Feb 21 (IANS) Essar Oilfields Services India Ltd announced on Wednesday that it has won a contract worth Rs 28 crore from state-run gas utility GAIL India to drill three firm and two optional wells in the Cambay Basin in Gujarat. Drilling for the project is expected to commence in April-May 2018, Essar said in a release here.     GAIL renegotiates 'price and volume' of Gazprom's LNG

    New Delhi, Jan 16 (IANS) Leading natural gas company GAIL on Tuesday said it has re-negotiated the "price and volume" of the long-term LNG sale and purchase agreement (SPA) with Russia's Gazprom. "The two parties have agreed to an adjustment to the price and volume of LNG supply thus enabling GAIL to develop incremental gas markets to offtake these volumes thereby mitigating volume risk," the company said in a statement. Gail had entered into a long-term LNG SPA building up to 2.5 MMTPA on a DES (Discharge-ex-Ship) basis with Gazprom Marketing & Trading Singapore (GMTS) in 2012.

    New Delhi, Nov 14 (IANS) State-run gas transmission utility GAIL India (GAIL) on Tuesday posted a 41.6 per cent rise in net profit for the second quarter ending September at Rs 1,309.63 crore, boosted by handsome earnings from its gas transportation and marketing business. GAIL's net profit for the same quarter last year was Rs 924.65 crore, the company said in a statement here. It earned a pre-tax profit of Rs 853.48 crore from gas transmission business during the second quarter, as compared with Rs 660.74 crore in the same quarter last year.
