Former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum believes that two of the worthy and best teams have reached the ICC World Test Championship final. India and New Zealand will lock horns beginning on the 18th of June to claim the ultimate prize in Test cricket. While Brendon McCullum has handed the upper hand to the Kiwis, he expects the clash to be a close one.

India are currently leading the ICC World Test Championship’s points table with 520 points in their kitty, followed by New Zealand, who are 100 points away. Having beaten England and Australia in their last two Test series, Virat Kohli’s men are high on confidence and have momentum on their side. But New Zealand have enjoyed an upper hand over India in the recent past.

The Black Caps stunned the men in blue in the 2019 World Cup semi-final in Manchester and scored a 2-0 victory when India visited New Zealand to play two Tests last year. Additionally, New Zealand beat England to inflict on the Three Lions their first home series defeat in seven years. As a result, they displaced India from the top of the Test rankings to further boost their chances of winning the final.

I think we are in for a ripping World Test Championship final: Brendon McCullum

Even though Brendon McCullum has placed the odds in favour of New Zealand, he believes it would be a close final. The former keeper-batsman feels that the match practice the Kiwis gained ahead of the decider would swing the decider their way. However, McCullum refuses to count India out due to their fighting spirit and hopes for the best team to lift the crown.

“Two of the best teams on the form have reached the final. I think 60-40 in favour of New Zealand. It’s going to be close. The match practice that New Zealand are going to have leading into the final could just title it in their way. I think it’s going to be close. Just as New Zealand respects India, as a fan, I will respect India, knowing how good they are and the fighting spirit they have. I think we are in for a ripping World Test Championship final. May the best team win and the best game,” McCullum told Sports Today.
