Tumblr axes porn on its community, will automatically delete explicit posts

The move has been taken in order to ensure the "most welcoming environment possible for their communities."

In a move that surprises several of its users, popular online community platform Tumblr has decided to axe all pornographic content. The move will flag all adult content from user accounts and will eventually delete them automatically using an algorithm. The decision has been taken in the interest of ensuring a healthy environment in its community, thereby joining the likes of Facebook and Instagram for discouraging exposure to explicit content.

Tumblr will be hiding all content of adult and explicit nature on its platform for now. All members, who have posted adult content, will be notified of the new community guidelines through an email.and will be asked to create a backup of their content and remove it manually from their timeline. Explicit posts will be laid with a content filter that will require user consent before viewing them directly. Tumblr will also mark such posts as 'Private', which will make it impossible to share anywhere on the platform. This will be allowed till 17th of December, after which Tumblr's algorithms will automatically start removing such content.

If you are wondering what qualifies as adult content on Tumblr, you should keep in mind that your content, whether it's a photo, video or GIF, shouldn't feature any of these - human genitalia, female nipples, media involving sexual acts and sexual illustrations. However, Tumblr has exceptions to certain nature of adult content, including nude classical statues and political protests with nudity. Additionally, art forms that demonstrate nudity, breastfeeding and after-birth photos will be allowed on the platform, until the time they don't feature sexual acts. There's no limitation to text-based adult content, which is why erotica still has a place on Tumblr.

However, Tumblr says that their algorithms to flag adult content could end up flagging posts that don't contain anything related to sexual activity. In this case, users can appeal to Tumblr for correction and could eventually retain their content.

"It is our continued, humble aspiration that Tumblr be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community. As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets," says Tumblr CEO Jeff D'Onofrio. "We won't always get this right, especially in the beginning, but we are determined to make your experience a positive one," he added.
