Top-Selling Cars In India October 2018: Maruti Still Dominates; Hyundai Follows

The Indian automotive market is one of the largest growing markets in the world. It is also one of the largest markets in terms of sales for many major car brands. The list of top-selling cars in India for the month of October 2018 is out now. Without any surprise, Maruti Suzuki is dominating the chart.

The Indian car manufacturer has occupied seven of the top ten spots, including the top five. The remaining slots are occupied by Hyundai Motors India, which recorded good growth figures mainly due to the launch of their all-new Santro.

As per the cumulative sales of Maruti Suzuki in October 2018, the company recorded a total sales of 146,766 units. This translates to a marginal growth of just 0.2 per cent over October 2017.

Having said that, here are the top-selling cars in India for the month of October 2018!

Maruti Alto

The Maruti Alto is perhaps one of the most popular cars in India. The Alto can be considered as the successor to the iconic Maruti 800 and is easily the most common hatchback on the Indian streets. The car has been in the market for more than 15 years and yet remains one of the most favourite budget cars in the country, to date.

The Maruti Alto is available in two formats: 800cc and 1.0-litre. Both models are among the best budget hatchbacks available in the market. The Maruti Alto comes equipped with all the basic essential features, expected in its price range.

Maruti Baleno

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno has improved in the rankings. The sales of the Baleno has improved over the last month. The premium hatchback offering from Maruti Suzuki was ranked fourth in September and has now overtaken the likes of the Dzire and the Swift to take second place.

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno is one of the premium offerings from the brand, sold exclusively through their Nexa outlets. The car boasts of upmarket features, good cabin space and premium build quality. Maruti Suzuki also offers a sportier version called the Baleno RS in India, powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged BoosterJet engine.

Maruti Dzire

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire is among the popular cars in the current compact-sedan segment in India. The Dzire has also been at the top of the car sales list on a few occasions. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire is based on its sportier hatchback sibling, the Swift.

Maruti Suzuki offers the Dzire in both petrol and diesel versions. It comes with the same engine and specifications as the Swift. The car is also available in an automatic variant. The Dzire comes with a range of features and options for a car in its segment.

Maruti Swift

The Maruti Swift has been in the Indian market now for over ten years. The car, currently in it third-generation offers a host of features and equipment. The Maruti Swift has also been titled as the 'most loved hatchback in India'.

The third-generation Swift was launched at this year's Auto Expo, held in February 2018. Since then, the hatchback has constantly been among the top-selling cars list. The hatchback even overtook the Alto in the month of September, recording the highest sales figures.

Maruti Vitara Brezza

The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza is the only SUV offering from the Indian car manufacturer. The Vitara Brezza has also been the top-selling SUV in the Indian market, quite a few times. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza is offered with a single diesel engine option. Maruti Suzuki recently introduced an AMT gearbox with the Vitara Brezza and is working on launching a petrol version in the future as well.

Hyundai i20 Elite

The Hyundai i20 Elite is one of the most popular offerings from the South-Korean car manufacturer in India. The latest iteration of the i20 Elite was launched at the 2018 Auto Expo. The Hyundai i20 Elite follows the company's fluidic design language and comes with a rich number of equipment and features to play with. The original i20 was a successor to the Hyundai Getz, which popularised the premium hatchback segment in the Indian market.

Hyundai i10 Grand

The Hyundai i10 Grand is among the best-selling cars for the carmaker after the i20 Elite. The i10 Grand slot between the i20 Elite and the recently launched all-new Santro. The Hyundai i10 Grand offers a lot of features and equipment, especially for a car in that segment. It is also a fun-to-drive hatchback. Hyundai offers the i10 Grand in only the petrol version, with the choice of either a manual or an automatic gearbox.

Hyundai Creta

The third and final Korean car in the top-ten selling cars list is the second-generation Hyundai Creta. The latest iteration of the car was introduced in the market earlier this year. The new generation Creta offers a range of cosmetic updates, as well as some additional features and equipment. The popular SUV, however, still carries forward the same engine; 1.6-litre petrol and 1.4 and 1.6-litre diesel options. The Hyundai Creta is currently leading the charts for the best selling SUV for October 2018.

Maruti WagonR

The Maruti Suzuki WagonR has been one of the most popular hatchbacks in the Indian market for a long time. The hatchback has received a number of updates over the years, yet has retained the tall boy looks which made it popular. Maruti Suzuki is currently working on bringing another update to the hatchback, with a launch scheduled in 2019. The company is also currently testing out an electric version of the WagonR to be introduced in India by 2020.

Maruti Celerio

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio was among the first cars from the Indian car manufacturer to come with an AMT gearbox, thus starting the trend. The Celerio is still among the most-affordable automatics available in the Indian market. The car is available in only the petrol version and comes equipped with all the features expected in its price range. Maruti Suzuki also offers the hatchback in a funkier avatar, the CelerioX.


Maruti Suzuki yet again dominates the top-selling car list in the country. Hyundai did manage to record a significant growth in the month of October, yet are still to catch up with the Indian manufacturer. However, with the launch of the all-new Santro in October, Hyundai has a good chance for the next month. The new Hyundai Santro has already garnered quite a bit of sale and is just below the Celerio in terms of sales numbers.
