Telangana: After KCR temple carvings, Armoor MLA's statue at Ganpati pandal sparks row

Ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLA Asannagari Jeevan Reddy sparked controversy after his statue was placed adjacent to Ganesha idol on Saturday.

The Armoor MLA, who is a close confidant of Telanagana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao's (KCR) daughter Kavita, himself inaugurated both the statues, said sources.

The controversy comes just a day after scores of political parties and Hindutva outfits condemned carvings of KCR and his party symbol(car) on the pillars of Yadadri temple in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district.

"Government should immediately intervene and remove those carvings on the pillars of the temple because it's a holy place. If they don't remove the carvings then, we are going to intensify our protest, said Subhash, state co-convener of Hindu religious outfit Bajarang Dal.

The popular shrine, which is currently under renovation, stoked controversy after pictures of KCR's carvings did rounds on social media, prompting outrage among opposition leaders in the state.

The temple at Yadagirigutta - the abode of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha - and its surrounding areas are being renovated and developed by the state government.

It's not clear as to where or on what portion of the temple these carved pillars would be used.

A senior official involved in the temple project said engraving rulers pictures on temples and parts of temples was not uncommon in history.

He pointed out that here were pictures of Krishnadevaraya, king of the Vijayanagar empire, at the Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple at Tirumala in Andhra Pradesh.
