Tata Car Sales Break-Up In May 2020: Altroz Becomes Brand’s Best-Selling Model

Tata Motors sales report for the month of May 2020 showcases that the brand registered a massive decline of 71% in the Indian market. The company registered just a little over 3,000 units of sales in the country last month, compared to almost 11,000 units a year ago in May 2019.

Now, looking at a model-wise break-up of the sales report, we can see that the Altroz premium hatchback has become the brand's best-selling model in the country in the previous month. The Tata Altroz premium hatchback overtook sales of other popular models such as the Tiago, Nexon and Harrier, registering 1,379 units of sales.

The popular Tata Tiago which is usually the best-seller for the brand came in at second. The Tiago hatchback managed to sell just 857 units in the Indian market last month. This is a decline of over 75% compared to the same period last year when the Tiago registered close to 3,600 units of sales.

The Tata Nexon compact-SUV came in third with 623 units of sales in the previous month. While the Harrier and Tigor came in fourth and fifth with 161 and 132 units of sales, respectively. Tata Motors recently updated the Tiago, Tigor and the Nexon models in the Indian market, to meet the brand's latest design language.

The Tata Harrier was also updated to comply with the BS6 emission norms, just before the start of lockdown. Tata Motors updated the 2.0-litre diesel engine on the Harrier and also gave it a hike in power output as well. The diesel unit now powering the BS6 Harrier produces 170bhp (an increase of 30bhp) and 350Nm of peak torque and is mated to a six-speed manual.

The Indian carmaker also discontinued a number of its older models from the Indian market. This includes the Bolt, Zest, Safari Storme and the Hexa. None of the models apart from the Hexa are expected to be re-introduced in the Indian market anytime soon.
