Supreme Court says linking Aadhaar with PAN is mandatory, here is how you should link

The Aadhaar number will be mandatory for filing I-T returns and for obtaining a Permanent Account Number.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday gave its verdict on Aadhaar. After declaring that the Aadhaar is constitutionally valid, the apex court's five-judge panel headed by Chief Justice Dipak Mishra gave the verdict that the Aadhaar number will be mandatory for filing I-T returns and for obtaining a Permanent Account Number. This essentially means that you will require an Aadhaar card for all income tax-related transactions and you will need to link your Aadhaar number with your PAN card.

The SC ruled that it is not mandatory to link Aadhaar with bank accounts or mobile numbers. The court also struck down Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act that allowed private companies to demand Aadhaar as a means of authentication. PAN linking, however, is still mandatory for income tax purposes. In other words, the court upheld the legality of Section 139AA of the Income-tax Act.

So, if you have an Aadhaar and a PAN card and still have not linked them, here are some ways in which you can do it.

-- One way of linking can be done via SMS. All you need to do is type UIDPAN< 12 digit Aadhaar>< 10 digit PAN> and send it to 567678 or 56161.

-- If you are a register user at the income tax e-filing website, you can check if your Aadhaar number has been linked by visiting www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. Log into the website by entering your PAN number, password and date of birth, after which you can head to Profile Settings and click on the option 'Link Aadhaar'. If you see a message that says your PAN is already linked to your Aadhaar number there is nothing more that you need to do.

If your PAN is not linked to your Aadhaar, a form will appear that will require you to fill details like your name, date of birth, gender that should match the data in your PAN records. Enter your Aadhaar number and submit the details. If everything matches, the linking process should be completed.

-- Users who have not registered themselves at the e-filing website can also link their Aadhaar via the income tax website. Head to the main page of the website where you should see a hyperlink that read Link Aadhaar on the left. Simply click on that and a form will appear that will require you to enter your PAN, Aadhaar number and name as per Aadhaar.
