Although a series about an Arctic expedition in the 1850s wouldn’t usually be on our radar, after finding out that the BBC’s new drama stars both Stephen Graham and Jack O’Connell, we're officially sold. Here’s everything we know so far about The North Water...

What is The North Water actually about?

The North Water is a TV adaption of Ian McGuire’s novel of the same name. According to the BBC, “The North Water tells the story of Patrick Sumner, a disgraced ex-army surgeon who signs up as the ship’s doctor on a whaling expedition to the Arctic.”

“On board he meets the harpooner Henry Drax, a brutish killer whose amorality has been shaped to fit the harshness of his world,” the synopsis reads, “Hoping to escape the horrors of his past, Sumner finds himself in a male-dominated world, on an ill-fated journey with a murderous psychopath. In search of redemption, his story becomes a harsh struggle for survival in the Arctic wasteland.”

Who is starring in The North Water?

The series features some big names in the acting world, including Jack O’Connell (Skins, Money Monster) as lead Patrick Sumner. Colin Farrell (The Gentlemen, In Bruges) stars as Henry Drax, and Stephen Graham (Line of Duty, Time) takes on the role of Captain Brownlee.

Where was The North Water filmed?

The series was filmed on location in the Arctic, as well as in studios in Budapest. Speaking of the experience, Graham told the BBC: “Filming on the ship was an incredible experience and one that I will never forget. To be so privileged to see such beautiful animals like polar bears in their natural habitat - albeit an ever changing one, sadly - was truly remarkable."
