Sheila Dikshit no more, leaders hail her role in building Delhi

While President Kovind remembered Sheila Dikshit's 15 years as a chief minister as a "glorious period making Delhi what it is today", PM Modi said that she "made a noteworthy contribution to Delhi's development".

Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit died on Saturday at 3:55 pm in Delhi. As soon as her death was confirmed by her secretary, condolences poured in from across the country as leaders hailed Sheila Dikshit for her role in building Delhi in her 15-year tenure as chief minister.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered their condolences on the demise of Sheila Dikshit. While President Kovind said that Sheila Dikshit's 15 years as a chief minister was a glorious period making Delhi what it is today, PM Modi said that she "made a noteworthy contribution to Delhi's development".

President Ram Nath Kovind said, "Sad to hear of the passing of Smt Sheila Dikshit, former Chief Minister of Delhi and a senior political figure. Her term in office was a period of momentous transformation for the capital for which she will be remembered. Condolences to her family and associates."


PM Modi said, "Deeply saddened by the demise of Sheila Dikshit Ji. Blessed with a warm and affable personality, she made a noteworthy contribution to Delhi's development. Condolences to her family and supporters. Om Shanti."


Omar Abdullah, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, offered his condolences on Sheila Dikshit's demise and said that she had done "wonders" for Delhi as a chief minister.

He said, "Just heard about the tragic demise of Sheila Dikshit ji. What terrible terrible news. I've always known her as a very warm and affectionate lady. She did wonders for Delhi as CM and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. May her soul rest in peace."

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also remembered her role as a chief minister and said she will always be remembered for the development of Delhi. Taking to Twitter, Nitin Gadkari wrote: "I am distressed after the demise of Delhi's former chief minister and Congress leader Sheila Dikshit. She will always be remembered for her contribution to the development of Delhi. My sympathies are with her family members. May her soul rest in peace."


Asserting that Sheila Dikshit's demise was a "huge loss" to Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that her contribution to the capital city will always be remembered.

"Just now got to know about the extremely terrible news about the passing away of Mrs Sheila Dikshit ji. It is a huge loss for Delhi and her contribution will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to her family members. May her soul rest in peace," Arvind Kejriwal said.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, "I am shocked to hear the sudden passing away of Smt Sheila Dixit. In her death, the country has lost a dedicated Congress Leader of the masses. People of Delhi will always remember her contribution to the development of Delhi during her tenure as Chief Minister for three years."

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara said, "Extremely shocked to learn about the demise of Smt #SheilaDikshit. A staunch Congresswoman and the longest serving chief minister of Delhi, she took our capital to great heights. My deepest condolences to her family. Prayers for her to rest in peace."


Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, "I'm devastated to hear about the passing away of Sheila Dikshit Ji, a beloved daughter of the Congress Party, with whom I shared a close personal bond. My condolences to her family & the citizens of Delhi, whom she served selflessly as a 3 term CM, in this time of great grief."


Jyotiraditya Scindia said, "Deeply saddened by the news of demise of Sheila Dikshit ji, stalwart of Indian politics and one of the fiercest leaders of the INC. Sheila ji transformed the capital and shaped it into how we know it today in her three terms as the chief minister. I extend my heart felt condolence and support to the family in these trying times. Her passing away is a national loss. May her soul rest in peace."


Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot tweeted: "Saddened to hear that Smt Sheila Dikshit has passed away, a true congressperson she worked tirelessly building Delhi into a world class city, yet her heart was always set on working for the people, a loss for India, my condolences to the family & prayers for the departed soul."


Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said, "Pained by the sudden demise of Sheila Dixit Ji. As a stalwart of Delhi politics, she will be remembered for her rich contribution during her 15-year tenure as Chief Minister. My condolences to her bereaved family."


Congress leader Ajay Maken said, "Hard to believe-My mentor and a mother like figure to me #SheilaDikshit ji is no more. Delhi can never forget her contribution. I will always thankfully remember the way she groomed me as a young politician and granted me valuable learning experience under her guidance! OmShanti."


The three-time chief minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit was admitted to Delhi's Fortis Escorts Heart Institute at 10:30 am this morning. The hospital, in a statement, said that Sheila Dikshit was brought to the hospital in a critical condition with cardiac arrest. Her condition stabilised temporarily, however, the hospital said, she had another cardiac arrest and "despite all the resuscitative efforts, passed away at 3:55 pm".
