Google-Jio Phone, 5G: What Mukesh Ambani Announced at Reliance AGM

Addressing the 44th Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries, Chairman Mukesh Ambani on Thursday, 24 June, announced a new smartphone, ‘JioPhone Next’ – which has been jointly developed by Google and Jio.

"“I am pleased to announce that Google and Jio teams have jointly developed a truly breakthrough smartphone – JioPhone Next. It is a fully-featured smartphone supporting the entire suite of applications from both Google and Jio.”" - Mukesh Ambani

More About JioPhone Next:

As per Ambani, it will be “the most affordable smartphone globally.”

It is slated to be available from 10 September.

JioPhone Next is powered by an optimised version of Android OS jointly developed by Jio and Google.

As per Ambani, “It is ultra-affordable and packs cutting-edge features.”

JioFiber, 5G: What Else Did Ambani Say?

In addition to the new smartphone, the Reliance chairman also spoke about the advances made by the company’s broadband arm JioFiber and Jio’s foray into 5G:

  • JioFiber has acquired over two million new premises over past year. With a cumulative base of three million active home and business users, JioFiber has become the largest and the fastest-growing fixed broadband operator in India.

  • Jio is uniquely positioned to quickly and seamlessly upgrade to 5G. To develop 5G ecosystem, the company is working with global partners to develop a range of 5G devices.

  • In 2021, Reliance will be launching its new energy business “with the aim of bridging the green energy divide in India and globally.”

Informing that their “business and financial success since last Annual General Meeting has exceeded expectations,” Ambani further said:

“But what has given me more happiness than our business performance is RIL’s humanitarian efforts during these difficult times.”

Ambani also inducted Yasir Al Rumayyan into the board of Reliance Industries as an independent director and announced that the $15 billion oil deal with Aramco will be completed this year.

Rumayyan is the chairman of Saudi Aramco and governor of the Kingdom's wealth fund, Public Investment Fund.
