Masood Azhar blacklist

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi after China blocked the bid at the UN Security Council to blacklist Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. In a tweet, Rahul called PM Modi “weak” and said he is scared of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

He also lashed out at Modi government’s failed policy to convince China to support its bid.

“Weak Modi is scared of Xi. Not a word comes out of his mouth when China acts against India. NoMo s China Diplomacy: Swing with Xi in Gujarat, Hug Xi in Delhi and Bow to Xi in China,” he tweeted.

Earlier on Wednesday, China, a veto member at the UNSC, put a technical hold on India’s bid to blacklist the Pakistani terrorist. The proposal to block under the 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee was moved by France, UK and US on February 27. The three countries are also permanent members of the UNSC. The decision to move a proposal to ban Azhar was taken after February 14 Pulwama terror attack in south Kashmir that killed 40 CRPF soldiers.

This was the fourth time when China has put a technical hold on India’s bid at the global forum. The technical hold by China means that no country can bring another proposal on the issue for the next six months. The hold can last for a maximum period of nine months. After this, China can again use its veto power to formally block the proposal or terminate it.
