Goa New Chief Minister: Goa assembly speaker Pramod Sawant has succeeded Manohar Parriakar as the next chief minister of Goa. Pramod Sawant emerged as the front-runner after a tough contest between him and Goa health minister Vishwajit Rane.
Earlier in the day, BJP President Amit Shah had informed the media that union transport minister Nitin Gadkari was holding discussions with the party’s alliance partners in the state and he will soon announce the name of next chief minister. However, till the late Monday night, the party could not formally name its leader who will succeed Manohar Parrikar as chief minister of Goa.
Gadkari had also played an important role in stitching the alliance with MGP and GFP when his party had failed to emerge as the single largest party in the state elections in March 2017. After Manohar Parrikar’s demise, Gadkari was sent to the state to forge an understanding with two BJP allies – Maharashtra Gomantak Party and Goa Forward Party – as the BJP lacks majority in Goa Vidhan Sabha.
After UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath publicly congratulated him on Monday night, it became clear that Pramod Sawant was the front-runner for the top post.
Heartfelt congratulations to hon’ble Pramod Sawant Ji on becoming the chief minister of Goa. Pramod Sawant Ji has made invaluable contribution as the speaker of Goa assembly, said UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath in a tweet.
However, a formal announcement by the party was delayed and the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for 11 pm on Monday night was called off.
Who is Pramod Sawant
Pramod Sawant was named Goa assembly speaker at a time when his party BJP had only 13 members, 8 short of clear majority in the divided house where the Congress emerged as the single largest party with 17 members.
It was crucial for the BJP to have a trusted party loyalist as Goa assembly speaker in a fractured house, where its government was dependent of support of three members each of Maharashtra Gomantak Party and Goa Forward Party and three other MLAs, including one of NCP.
In a firefight exercise, BJP high command had sent union transport minister Nitin Gadkari to cobble up an alliance to keep the Congress from forming the government. However, the party had to sent back Parrikar as chief minister at the insistence of its allies and Sawant was picked by the party high command for the crucial post of assembly speaker.
Professional and personal life
Pramod Sawant, 45, is an Ayurvedic doctor, he acquired BAMS degree from a medical college in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. He also acquired a master’s degree in social work from Pune.
His wife Sulakshana is also a BJP worker and at present she is in charge of BJP Mahila Morcha in Goa.
