Piyush Goyal retains Railway Ministry! As the news of Modi government’s cabinet allocation broke, it would come as a relief for both Railway Ministry officials and passengers that Piyush Goyal has been retained as the Railway Minister – signalling continuity in crucial projects. Piyush Goyal, a Rajya Sabha MP from Maharashtra is BJP’s go-to-man. Back in January this year, days ahead of Interim Budget 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi entrusted Goyal with the responsibility of presenting the Interim Budget in Parliament in the absence of an ailing Arun Jaitley. That’s Goyal for you, a man who has headed ministries of coal, power, railways, and finance. The 54-year-old’s meteoric rise from being a Chartered accountant (CA) to the post of Railways Minister is nothing short of phenomenal.
Goyal will also handle the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Goyal worked as an investment banker and is known for his corporate network developing skills that set him apart and makes him a strategist for the Modi government as well as an unsung hero who plays a major role in resource mobilization for BJP. Goyal also enjoys the backing of PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. He was the Finance Minister from May 2018 to August 2018 as Jaitley was recuperating from illness. Goyal was the treasurer of BJP and the party did not appoint another treasurer after him as the responsibility of raising funds for the party still lies with him.

Piyush Goyal’s personal life: Goyal belongs to a prominent political family. His father Vedprakash Goyal was former Union minister of Shipping, and National Treasurer of the BJP for over two decades. Goyal’s mother Chandrakanta Goyal was a three-time MLA from Mumbai.

Piyush Goyal’s achievements as Cabinet Ministers

As a Railway minister, Goyal achieved historic firsts. During his tenure as Railway Minister, the central government laid foundation stone for the first bullet train which would run from Mumbai to Ahmedabad. Indian Railways also saw its first indigenously-built and engine-less high-speed train Vande Bharat Express being rolled out. Indian Railways also commissioned its longest bridge and converted a diesel loco into an electric one for the first time. During his first stint as Railway Minister, Indian Railways built its first transport university and launched first air-conditioned local train. The national transporter also achieved one huge mark – lowest accident figures in nearly three decades.

Goyal as a Power Minister was also credited for making transformational changes in India’s power sector. Several schemes include fast tracking of electrification of villages, power sector reforms, world’s largest LED bulb distribution programme, roll out of UDAY and focus on renewable energy.
