Oppo A9 2020 Review: Good Looking Smartphone With Quad-Camera Setup

Priyanka Dua

Oppo has launched many mid-range smartphones lately -- Oppo F11 and Oppo K3 to name a few. The company has now launched the Oppo A9 2020 for the Indian market. The new device comes in two variants -- 4GB/8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. It is priced at Rs. 16,990 and Rs. 19,990 respectively.

The newly launched Oppo A9 2020 is backed by a massive 5,000 mAh battery and runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor. The device is available in Marine Green and Space Purple. So we got a chance to try our hands-on the Oppo A9 2020, and this is what we think about this smartphone.

Oppo A9 2020: Design And Display

The most impressive thing about this smartphone is its looks. The Oppo A9 2020 features a gradient finish on the back panel, similar to the Reno 2. However, it is very prone to fingerprint smudges. Also, there is a vertically aligned camera set up along with a Led Flashlight at the back. You'll also get a fingerprint sensor at the center, which works well. Also, there's an OPPO branding at the bottom of the back panel.

Talking about the ports, then you'll get a power button on the right, while the volume rocker, dedicated SIM card, and Micro SD slots are placed on the left side of the device. The device has an audio jack and USB Type-C port along with a speaker grill at the bottom.

Overall the smartphone seems quite premium and looks good in the hand. However, the device is a bit heavy, and you cannot operate it single handedly.

On the display front, the Oppo A9 2020 features a 6.5-inch waterdrop display with Gorilla Glass 3+ protection. There is no bezel at the front. The display comes with a huge screen that consumes most of the real estate. Overall, you get an 89 percent screen-to-body ratio, which seems quite good. The display offers excellent viewing angles and brightness levels. Also, the display is good enough for watching OTT platforms and playing games.
Besides, there's a face unlock feature, which we found out to be pretty quick. The smartphone also comes with Night Shield, which means you can reduce blue light, and trust me it is very useful if you are going through your social media feed during late hours or reading something.

Oppo A9 2020: Quad-Rear Camera Setup

On the imaging front, the smartphone is equipped with a quad-camera setup. It includes a 48MP primary sensor along with an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 2MP depth sensor, and a 2MP macro lens. Upfront, there's a 16MP sensor along with AI beautification mode. Besides, the Oppo A9 2020 comes with different modes such as Portrait, Night, Pano, Expert, and Ultra Night Mode 2.0. The device supports 720p and 1080p recording format.

Talking about the image quality, the 48MP camera offers vibrant and detailed shots. Furthermore, the smartphone provides enough details when you zoom into the scene. We got some good images using the night mode as well. Portrait, HDR, and ultra-wide lens mode also work pretty well.

However, video quality isn't very good. The front-facing camera 16MP camera also performs very well and captured good selfies in the daylight as well as during the night time. The device performs fine on this front. However, the base variant of the Realme XT features a 64MP camera at the back, and it is priced at Rs. 15,999. So, i believe this smartphone is a bit overpriced.

Oppo A9 2020: Software And Benchmark

The Oppo A9 2020 runs Android 9 Pie with color OS 6.0.1 on top, which works smooth most of the time. In fact, you can navigate through various apps and multitask easily. The smartphone comes with many preloaded apps like Dailyhunt, WPS Office, Paytm, Newpoint, and UC Browser. However, you can uninstall them if you are not using those apps.

Overall, there were no lags during our usage. The smartphone also offers a feature called Digital Wellbeing and Parental control, so that you can set timers of apps and put restrictions on the content. There is a feature called Game Space where all games are installed. There's a Clone app, which allows you to transfer data on your old phone to a new phone. The OS also comes with smart functions such as Riding Mode, Smart Assistant, Music Party, and Gesture Navigation.

We also ran some benchmarks on the smartphone, such as AnTuTu, PC Mark 2, and 3D Mark, and the results were decent. The device scored 77509 on the AnTuTu benchmark. While it scored 6672 in works 2.0 performance tests. Lastly, it logged 1074 points in the Sling Shot Extreme test.

Oppo A9 2020: Hardware, Battery, And Connectivity

The smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC, which is not new a processor. But, it can handle high-end games like the PUBG. Overall, the smartphone can handle heavy tasks without any heating issue. Also, there is an 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage, which allows you to download many apps easily.

The Oppo A9 2020 is backed by 5,000 mAh battery with 10W charging standard, Type-C port, and reverse charging capacity. During our testing period, the Oppo A9 2020 easily lasted for two days. I also played many games and streamed videos on YouTube and still got a full-day battery backup. The same processor you'll get in the Realme 5 and the Xiaomi Mi 3 at Rs. 8,999 and Rs.12,999, respectively.
On the connectivity front, you get dual SIM support, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, and GPS with GLONASS. The smartphone will not disappoint you on the performance front.

Oppo A9 2020: Should You Buy?

The Oppo A9 2020 offers a good design and build at this price point. The camera performs very well, and the battery backup is impressive. But, unfortunately, the market is full with a smartphone at the same price bracket. Overall, if you are looking for good smartphones with a long battery, then you should go for this smartphone. However, the base variant of Realme XT is priced at Rs. 15,999. It comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 processor and a 64MP quad-lens rear camera.
