News You Can Use: ICICI Bank Customers Can Now Open FDs, Pay Bills on WhatsApp

Customers of ICICI Bank can now do a host of banking activities through WhatsApp, the private sector bank announced Thursday. These include creating fixed deposits, paying utility bills and accessing details of trade finance directly on their WhatsApp numbers. While services like creating an FD and paying utility bills are available for customers, trade finance services are currently only available for select corporates.

“The service for recharge of prepaid mobile phones will also be available shortly on WhatsApp. These new services scale up the total number of banking services available to ICICI Bank customers on WhatsApp to 25. The Bank launched a host of services on WhatsApp six months ago. The list includes checking savings account balance, last three transactions, credit card limit, get details of pre-approved instant loan offers, block/unblock credit/debit card in a secure manner, opening of instant savings account in a few minutes, opting for loan moratorium, access pdf of some prominent newspapers /magazines and locating nearby essential stores,” ICICI Bank said in a press release.

“Over two million users have adopted banking services on WhatsApp in a short span of six months. Enthused by the response, we have added these new industry-first services. WhatsApp Banking is now available for retail, NRI, corporate and MSME customers with a variety of services,” said Bijith Bhaskar, Head-Digital Channels and Partnership, ICICI Bank.

Customers can add ICICI Bank’s verified WhatsApp number 8640086400 to their contacts and say ‘Hi’ from their registered mobile number. They can also give a missed call or SMS OPTIN to 9542000030 to start a conversation by getting a secure and interactive menu on their mobile screen through the WhatsApp messaging platform. The bank will respond with the list of available services.

The bank stated that the WhatsApp facility will be available 24×7 throughout the year (including on bank holidays), and the Facebook-owned messaging platform’s end-to-end encryption makes it a secure way of banking. The services are also available in Hindi. To stop receiving alerts on WhatsApp, customers can SMS OPTOUT to 9542000030.
