Following its drop last week, Mortal Kombat's trailer has racked up over 115 million views in its first week alone, meaning it's now the biggest red-band trailer (in other words, R-rated) in the history of red-band trailers. Impressive work.
Based on the video game series of the same name, Mortal Kombat follows Cole Young (Lewis Tan), an MMA fighter unaware of his heritage – and that other-wordly Cryomancer Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) is dead set on hunting him down.
"Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with.
"Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark," the synopsis reads.
"Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth's greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe."
Mortal Kombat will be released in US cinemas on April 16 and will also stream on HBO Max in the US. It's set for an April 16 release in the UK, but that date is subject to change.
