Xiaomi is more than just a smartphone brand. And from time to time the company likes to remind its fans and industry watchers about this by launching some of its other products here, products that use a lot of tech and are smart but aren't smartphones. Alongside smartphones, Xiaomi makes televisions, air purifiers, power banks, smart fitness bands, and many other kinds of products. Earlier, over here at the India Today Tech we reviewed the Mi smart LED bulb in June this year and found it to be an "affordable smart bulb that deserves to be in your bedroom". After a bulb, what's next? Well, now there is a lamp.
Xiaomi turned five years old in India in July this year. To celebrate, the company launched several smart products, including the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp. Notably, the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp was first put up as a crowdfunded product in India, but later public launch happened.
The Mi Rechargeable LED lamp comes at a price of Rs 1,499 in India. Is it worth buying the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp at this price? After using it for a few weeks, I believe it's a decent product and is rather affordable. But that is all there is to it.
Mi Rechargeable LED lamp design and build
The Mi LED lamp sports simple ergonomics. It comes with a 120-degree tilting head that allows users to move the head of the lamp in the angle they deem fit, as per their requirement. A stand made of aluminium alloy and plastic holds the head of the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp.
In addition to the simple design the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp is also simple and easy-to-use. One of the best bits is that the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp can be controlled with just one button that sits on the curved non-slip pads, which balance the lamp pretty well.
The one-control button allows users to control the brightness of the light as well as the colour temperature. The Mi Rechargeable LED lamp comes in one colour - White. The white looks good but I wish there are more colour options available always suits the room decor. For example in my room, with its off-white walls, I wished the lamp had a more sharper colour. White is elegant and more choices are always good.
As far as the build quality is concerned the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp feels extremely sturdy. It is made of aluminium alloy, with plastic coating on the frame. This combination makes the lamp durable. Another good bit is that the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp is fairly light and can be moved from one place to another easily. Lamps can be and this is no exception. It weighs around 420g, which is pretty lightweight for a table lamp.
How to use Mi Rechargeable LED lamp
It's pretty simple and easy.
Like most Xiaomi products the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp isn't a smart device. Like the Mi smart LED bulb the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp can't be controlled with the Mi Home app. As I said in the review, the Mi smart LED bulb can be controlled with Mi Home app on both iOS as well as Android. Sadly, I can't say that for the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp.
To control the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp the user will need to use the one control button that sits on the curved non-slip pads at the bottom. For me, it quite irritating to get up and go to the lamp to switch it off whenever it is not in use.
Here's how to use the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp:
-- Place the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp as per requirement. I used it on my study table.
--The good bit is it the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp doesn't need to be plugged in to be in use. This helps users to use the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp even during power cuts.
-- The Mi Rechargeable LED lamp offers three colour temperature mode - bright mode, cool mode, and warm mode.
-- The bright mode is apt if you're reading or writing or doing any other desk work. To switch to Bright mode make one click on "one-control" button. The bright mode offers 100 lumens brightness.
-- The cool mode is better if you have the lamp sitting near your TV or computer. This is the light mode I used most of the time. The cool mode feels soothing to the eyes. Xiaomi also claims that the cool mode is great for reducing eye strain when looking at screens. The cool mode of Mi Rechargeable LED lamp offers 60 lumens brightness.
-- The third and my favorite light mode is called warm mode. This mode helps make the room look cosy and works the best as a night light. The warm mode of Mi Rechargeable LED lamp offers only 10 lumens brightness.
--The Mi Rechargeable LED lamp lets users switch from one light mode to another in just a click. The one-control button will need to be long pressed to switch from one light mode to another.
Mi Rechargeable LED lamp battery backup
As the name of the lamp suggests the Mi LED lamp is a "rechargeable" lamp. This means it works like smartphones. It needs to be recharged using the microUSB cable that comes bundled with the lamp. The port sits at the backside of the bottom pads. The Mi Rechargeable LED lamp comes packed with a 2000mAh battery and for me, it lasted for around 10 hours on single charge. It depends on the usage. If you're an avid reader and using the Mi Lamp as your light source, the battery will run out quicker.
Mi Rechargeable LED lamp for Rs 1,499: Should you buy it?
I believe for the price of Rs 1,499, the Mi Rechargeable LED lamp is a good deal. It is available on Mi.com and is on open sale.
The Mi Rechargeable LED lamp sports a simple and clean design, offers long battery life and brings various light modes to the users, which is great. I also like the one-button control system as it makes the usage process simple and easy.
What is not great is that the Mi LED lamp isn't a smart lamp. Notably, in China, the Mi LED lamp is smart and can be controlled with a smartphone (both Android & iOS). Xiaomi should have launched the same smart variant of Mi LED lamp in India. After all, Xiaomi is not a lamp company. It is a technology company, and I think it is fair to expect its smarter gadgets from it, even when that gadget happens to be a lamp.
