MG Hector Smart, Sharp variants most popular, SUV expected to get tough competition from upcoming Kia Seltos

MG Hector challenges the likes of Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV500, Jeep Compass and Hyundai Creta. Also, the entry-level Hector is cheaper than Harrier, XUV500 and Compass. The upcoming Kia-Seltos will be another major rival.

MG Hector has been one of the most exciting introductions of 2019. While the SUV was unveiled in India on May 15, its bookings opened on June 4 and the launch took place on June 27. With a starting price of Rs 12.18 lakh (ex-showroom, India), MG (Morris Garages) Motor's maiden product for India is available in Style, Super, Smart and Sharp variants, and the carmaker has claimed that Smart and Sharp trims are the most popular with the highest demand.

The all-new MG Hector is available with petrol as well as diesel engine options. There is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol mill that churns out 143 PS and 250 Nm of torque. The diesel variant makes use of a 2.0-litre turbocharged motor that produces 170 PS and 350 Nm of torque. The petrol engine also has a 48V hybrid option with slightly better fuel efficiency. While the company offers a standard 6-speed manual gearbox, the petrol option (only non-hybrid) also gets a 6-speed DCT. MG Motor had announced on June 27 that it had received over 10,000 bookings for Hector. The figure has crossed 21,000 mark now and the company has started delivering the SUV as well. However, the carmaker has "temporarily" closed the bookings of the SUV owing to an inability to cater to such high initial demand. Earlier this month, it was also reported that there was a seven-month waiting period on select Hector variants.

So far as dimensions are concerned, the SUV has best-in-class length and wheelbase at 4,655 mm and 2,750 mm, respectively. While the width is 1,835 mm, the height is 1,760 mm. The boot capacity is 587 litres.

No doubt MG Hector boasts of several premium features. It gets a sporty front grille with surrounding chrome accent, split LED headlamps, LED DRLs and LED fog lamps. Other features include LED tail lamps, dual-tone machined alloys, shark fin antenna, floating light turn indicators and heated ORVM. The SUV gets a plush cabin with 10.4-inch HD touchscreen AVN system, 7-inch coloured MID, 4-way power adjustable co-driver seat, 2nd-row seat recline, fatigue reminder setting, powered tailgate opening and dual-pane panoramic sunroof.

Like several recently-launched vehicles, MG Hector is also a connected one with iSmart Next Gen. The connectivity technology has over 50 features. The soon-to-be-launched Kia Seltos will feature the UVO Connect system.
