Maruti Suzuki Ciaz to soon get the new 1.5-litre diesel engine, Ertiga and S-Cross also in line

Currently, Ciaz is available in two engine options -- a 1.5-litre K15 petrol motor and a 1.3-litre DDiS 200 diesel powertrain. Both are smart hybrids. The former is good for 103 bhp of power and 138 Nm of torque, while the latter churns out 89 bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque.

Maruti Suzuki will soon debut the all powerful 1.5-litre diesel engine, developed by India's largest carmaker itself, in Ciaz. Following its deployment in the mid-sized sedan, the new motor is expected to feature in multi-purpose vehicle Ertiga and premium crossover S-Cross as well.

Both the engines are mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The petrol variant comes with a four-speed automatic transmission as well.

Several reports available online are claiming that new engine 1.5-litre diesel engine will start featuring in Ciaz from February only. The fresh motor will produce 95 bhp of power and 225 Nm of torque, with the fuel efficiency expected to be north of 26 kmpl.

This does not mean that the current 1.3-litre diesel engine, sourced from Fiat, will cease to come with Ciaz immediately. However, claims are being made that this BS-IV engine will not be upgraded to meet the new emission norms and phased out by 2020.

Now, the new 1.5-litre diesel powertrain is expected to meet the BS-IV emission norms initially. It will be upgraded to BS-VI level before the new set of rules come into force in 2020. This can be a calculated measure on the part of the company to keep the prices of Ciaz in check for sometime as the engine complying with BS-VI will cost a lot more than the current one.

Below are the different variants and prices (ex-showroom, Delhi) of Ciaz.

Petrol Manual

-- Smart Hybrid Sigma - Rs 8.19 lakh
-- Smart Hybrid Delta - Rs 8.81 lakh
-- Smart Hybrid Zeta - Rs 9.58 lakh
-- Smart Hybrid Alpha - Rs 9.97 lakh

Petrol Automatic

-- Smart Hybrid Delta - Rs 9.80 lakh
-- Smart Hybrid Zeta - Rs 10.58 lakh
-- Smart Hybrid Alpha - Rs 10.98 lakh

Diesel Manual

-- Smart Hybrid Sigma - Rs 9.19 lakh
-- Smart Hybrid Delta - Rs 9.80 lakh
-- Smart Hybrid Zeta - Rs 10.62 lakh
-- Smart Hybrid Alpha - Rs 11.02 lakh

The diesel variants of Ciaz will definitely cost more with the new 1.5-litre powertrain. As the BS-VI norms will kick in the prices will move north again. Ciaz competes in the mid-sized sedan segment with the likes of Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid and Volkswagen Vento.
