Mantri produces film on Birsa Munda

Shareen Mantri opted for an unconventional entry into Bollywood. Her debut feature, Beyond the Clouds, was also the first Indian feature of Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi and debut of actor Ishaan.

For her banner Namah Pictures' first web series, she collaborated with Sunny Leone for Karenjit Kaur: The Untold Story. Her next feature will be about tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda, which will see popular Tamil filmmaker Pa Ranjith make his Hindi language debut. Mantri cannot wait to get that project going.

"He has a great cinematic eye and is an engaging storyteller," she said. "He is passionate about the subject."

A student of still photography from SNDT University in Mumbai, Mantri started out by working with photographers. She set up Eye Candy Films with business partner Kishor Arora to direct commercials and music videos.

Mantri doesn't intend to be a part of the Bollywood rat race. "We are trying not to be a factory. There is certain time needed to develop a script," she said. "I don't want to feel the pressure that I should do one project a year. It's not the right approach. I want to enjoy the process too," she says, adding "I am going to say never say never," to directing films.
