UP man takes 71 sheep to let wife go with lover, sheep owner father wants flock back

In a strange deal of sorts, a married couple in Uttar Pradesh parted ways when the husband agreed to give away his wife to her lover in exchange of 71 sheep.

According to a report in the Times of India, this exchange happened in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur under the watchful eyes of the village panchayat after the woman eloped with her lover. The two started living together at her lover's house in Charpani.

Days later, the husband, the wife and her lover approached the village panchayat for a solution when the village heads asked Umesh Pal (27) to give up half of his flock of sheep to be with the woman, Seema Pal (25).

As Umesh agreed, the husband, Rajesh Pal, left with 71 sheep and Umesh went with the woman. However, while all three were happy with the exchange, Umesh's father was hardly amused as he had to give up his precious sheep over his son's love life.

The father approached the police to get back his sheep and tried to lodge a complaint against the husband. Khorabar Police has lodged an FIR and is looking into the ownership of the flock.

While the husband has maintained that he did not steal any of the sheep as Umesh willingly parted with the cattle, the father says he is only interested in getting back the sheep.

The woman has said that she was unhappy in her marriage and was unable to conceive a child even after several years. She has refused to go back to her husband.

Ultimately it seems Umesh's father would turn out to be the loser at the end of it all as police have also maintained that if the entire deal happened going by Umesh's wishes, then the husband cannot be charged with theft.
