Jio GigaFiber tops Netflix ISP Speed Index again in March but Airtel is catching up fast
Reliance has started testing Jio GigaFiber in select cities and as expected, the service has been promising higher speeds than other broadband services in the country. As of now, the network doesn't have enough traffic and only has to deal with a handful of consumers and Jio's employees. That said, since the service is already in use, Netflix picks it up for ISP Index and has found it to be the fastest broadband service for the month of March.
The latest Netflix ISP Speed Index for the month of March shows Jio GigaFiber leading the charts with an average speed of 3.57Mbps. This is quite high compared to 7 Star Digital's 3.40Mbps speed. Jio GigaFiber still relies only on its Fiber network while 7 Star Digital relies on Fiber, Cable and Wireless networks. GigaFiber previously recorded speeds at 3.61Mbps, which is a substantial drop compared to scores of the previous month.
As for Airtel, the operator with its Fiber network and Cable connections is still way behind the others and only managed to achieve up to 3.31Mbps, which is lower than Jio's score but higher than its previous month's performance. Hathway also showed improvements and managed to deliver average speeds of 2.98Mbps with its Cable and DSL networks.
While Jio GigaFiber is still on top, the average speeds have declined considerably. The ISP has been dominating the charts on Netflix ISP Speed Index since its launch in September 2018. Since the service is still in beta test and available in only a few cities and towns, the drop in performance can still be justified, considering its subscribers are enjoying free Internet till the commercial service rolls out.
Consumers can still use Jio GigaFiber for free under the Preview offer, wherein they need to pay a deposit amount of Rs 4,500 and enjoy free broadband service until the commercial rollout happens within the next few months. After the commercial rollout, Jio is expected to price it competitively, with rumours suggesting a price of Rs 500 for 100GB data allotments at 100Mbps.
Previously, some leaks on the web suggested that Jio is testing a Triple Play Plan for GigaFiber subscribers. While the price was hidden, the leak did reveal all the benefits of the plan. The plan offers free voice calls, 100GB data and a validity of 28 days. The plan also includes a free subscription to Jio Apps and Jio Home TV. We speculate the Triple Play Plan may cost around Rs 500 to undercut all other plans from rival service providers.
