Jailed for 6 years in Pakistan, Hamid Ansari visits Mecca after returning home
Hamid Ansari, who spent six years in a Pakistani prison on charges of espionage, made it to Mecca in Saudi Arabia for thanks-giving with his family. Hamid, 33, went with brother Khalid, mother Fauzia and father Nehal Ansari almost two months after returning to his home in India.
An engineer by profession, he had fallen in love with a Pakistani girl he met through Facebook. He went through Afghanistan to Pakistan without valid documents to pursue her but was caught and jailed in "dark dungeons".
Unable to contact their son, Fauzia and Nehal Ansari rummaged through Hamid's social media accounts to find online chats with the girl and zeroed in on his travel. They petitioned the Government of India to look into matter. Hamid was released by the Pakistani authorities after completing his sentence and returned to India in December 2018.
It was Fauzia's wish to visit the holy city of Mecca after Hamid's safe return.
Hamid has been active on his Facebook account since the last two months. He has uploaded pictures, shared videos and dedicated songs to his mother.
On February 9, Hamid shared pictures of his Mecca trip. In a picture where he is standing at Baitullah next to the Kaba -- Islam's holiest site - Hamid said, "Being one of lucky ones."
