The Indian car market is maturing and the thought of a Rs 12-14 lakh hatchback is now not as ludicrous as it once sounded. Hyundai, which recently launch the first proper Electric Vehicle (EV) in India might also launch the first super premium hatch in the country. Currently, the premium hatchback segment ends near the Rs 10-lakh mark, with the likes of the i20/Baleno/Polo, but Hyundai wants to take it a notch higher.
Meet the i30. This was recently spotted during testing which fuelled speculation regarding its India launch. The i30 is much bigger than the i20 (length of 4.3m) and is big on space too with as much legroom as a Creta/Elantra and certainly more than a Verna.
The interiors are also modern Hyundai with an understated look but high on quality. Soft touch materials are used and the cabin is likely to be all black, though beige can be offered. Now being an above-4m car, Hyundai is free to go to town with the engine options, since pricing is not an issue.
Thus, we think the i30 may get the 1.0 Turbo petrol from the Venue with a 7-speed DCT while a 1.4l diesel can be offered too. In terms of price, expect it to be at least Rs 3-4 lakh more than the i20 — thus expect a starting price of Rs 10-12 lakh with the top-end offered at Rs 14 lakh. What are your thoughts on the i30?
