Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni lamented on the impact that the dew had during their defense of 188 against the Delhi Capitals following a seven-wicket defeat in their IPL 2021 campaign opener in Mumbai.
Chasing 189 to win, Delhi Capitals, thanks to whirlwind knocks from the opening duo of Shikhar Dhawan (85 off 54 balls) and Prithvi Shaw (72 off 38 balls), made a mockery of CSK’s target.
While dew played a substantial part, MS Dhoni reckoned that his bowlers could have done better as far as execution is concerned. He, however, added that the bowlers will get better with this experience.
“A lot depended on how much dew you would get. That’s the reason we wanted to get as much runs as possible. The first few overs it was a bit tacky, and the batters did well to get to 188. Coming to bowling, we could have done better. The batters were hitting over the top, there was some boundary deliveries, where the execution wasn’t nice. The bowlers will learn for the coming guys,” MS Dhoni said in the post-match presentation.
Dhoni further added with a 7:30 start, teams’ batting first will have to aim for 15-20 extra runs in order to somewhat negate the impact of dew in the second half.
He also heaped praise on the Capitals’ fast bowling duo of Avesh Khan and Chris Woakes for bowling good deliveries to get both of his openers out cheaply.
“As I said, you have to look ahead, especially when you have dew, you have to get extra runs. 7.30 start means opposition will have less amount of dew and we have to score those 15-20 runs extra. After that you need to get early wickets also. Well, if we keep consistently getting dew, 200 is something all teams have in mind. I felt both our openers got very good deliveries, and that can happen in a game like this” said Dhoni.
CSK have four more games in Mumbai and their next encounter will be against Punjab Kings in six days’ time.
