iPhone XR gets an unofficial price cut, now selling at starting price of Rs 70,500
The iPhone XR (Review) is available in India at discounted prices via offline stores. Mumbai-based retailer Mahesh Telecom tweeted that the iPhone XR is now available at its store starting at Rs 70,500 for the 64GB variant. The 128GB and 256GB models are priced at Rs 75,500 and Rs 85,900, respectively. The price drop has not been made official by Apple and is seemingly only available via offline retailers.
The iPhone XR was launched starting at Rs 76,900 in India going up to Rs 91,900. The price drop makes the XR a little more affordable, although "affordable" is a pretty relative term here. Yes, the XR is cheaper than the iPhone XS and XS Max, but it still carries an ultra premium price tag compared to its competition. As of now, it is unclear whether more offline retailers are selling the iPhone XR at this new pricing, or whether this is a Mahesh Telecom-exclusive. The pricing on Flipkart remains the same for all the iPhones.
Despite the price drop, the iPhone XR still carries a big price tag, but this might be the best time for consumers who have been waiting to upgrade from their older iPhone models. When we reviewed the XR, we called it Apple's best iPhone for most people. This is because the iPhone comes with most of the same features as the more expensive models, in addition to what is probably the best battery life of any iPhone.
Thanks to a lower price point, the iPhone XR was Apple's best-selling iPhone last November, but the overall iPhone sales has been on the decline. In a recent Q1 earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company will re-adjust the prices of the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max in countries where the phones have been priced exorbitantly. India is one of the most expensive countries to buy the iPhone, and it is possible that the new price drop reported by Mahesh Telecom is a response to that.
In terms of size, the iPhone XR slots between the iPhone XS and XS Max. It gets a 6.1-inch LCD Liquid Retina HD display (1792x828). It is powered by the A12 Bionic chipset and brings 3GB of RAM. The iPhone XR also supports Face ID and ships with iOS 12. The phone gets a single 12MP wide-angle camera on the back and comes with OIS and f/1.8 aperture. The front sees a 7MP TrueDepth camera similar to the XS and XS Max.
