India did not consult or inform the US on Article 370: US

The United States on Wednesday refuted claims that India has informed it before taking a decision on abrogation of Article 370, which stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status.

"Contrary to press reporting, the Indian government did not consult or inform the US Government before moving to revoke Jammu and Kashmir's special constitutional status," the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs of the US State Department posted on Twitter. The tweet was posted on behalf of Acting Assistant Secretary Alice Wells.

A media report had claimed on Monday that New Delhi had kept Washington DC in the loop about its plans for Jammu and Kashmir. News website The Print reported that National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had briefed his US counterpart John Bolton Bolton about the government's plans to scrap special privileges granted to Jammu and Kashmir in February.

On August 1, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Bangkok on the matter, The Print report. The media report had attributed the information to unnamed sources.
