Gypsy no more! Maruti Suzuki discontinues iconic SUV in India
Nearly three-and-a-half decades after it was introduced in India, Maruti Suzuki has put a full-stop on the production of the iconic Gypsy. In an official communication to its dealers, the company has requested them not to accept any further bookings for the SUV.
Launched in India in 1985, Gypsy was the third vehicle to be driven into the country by the company after 800 (SS80) and Omni. In its present form, the SUV will not meet the upcoming crash test and emission norms. Moreover, Maruti Suzuki has seen the demand for Gypsy declining over a period of time. All these reasons have culminated into the firm deciding on discontinuing the production of the iconic vehicle.
Maruti Suzuki Gypsy has been a favourite among the off-road enthusiasts in India. A high ground clearance (210 mm) and four wheel drive option ensured better handling and control and more power. The SUV has been used extensively by the Indian armed forces as well.
Initially, the company had provided a 1.0-litre engine in Gypsy. It now has a four-cylinder, 1.3-litre, G13BB MPFI, 16-valve, petrol motor producing 80 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 103 Nm at 4,500 rpm. The powertrain is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The SUV gets disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear.
Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is available with features like removable canvas top, windshield washer and three speed wiper, vanity mirror on left sunvisor, reclining and sliding front seats, adjustable head restraints, front package tray, lockable glove compartment, hazard warning light, hydraulic clutch in cooling fan, distributor-less ignition and multi-function levels.
