Google confirms Allo app shutdown for 2019, here's how you can save your chat history before it's gone
Google has announced to shut down its Allo messaging app and focus on its Messages app. The company in a blog post said that the app will continue working through March 2019 with users having the option to export their chat history.
While the official confirmation comes now, the company had already stopped investing in Allo back in April hinting that it would soon bring a replacement to the app. The company had then said that the app as a whole failed to achieve the level of traction that company had hoped for.
Currently, the main focus of Google is on the Messages. It has already received some of the key features of Allo like Smart Reply, GIFs and desktop support. It aims to become a one stop chat and messaging solution for phone users.
"Earlier this year we paused investment in Allo and brought some of its most-loved features-like Smart Reply, GIFs and desktop support-into Messages. Given Messages' continued momentum, we've decided to stop supporting Allo to focus on Messages," Google VP of Consumer Communications Products Matt Klainer said in a blog post.
"We've learned a lot from Allo, particularly what's possible when you incorporate machine-learning features, like the Google Assistant, into messaging," he added.
The shutdown of Allo and focus on Messages app is part of Google's aim to focus toward a "simpler communications experience" and also better the SMS experience on phones.
The app will continue to work till March 2019 and users can export their chat history until then. To save your Allo messages and media, you can back them up. You can restore that information on a new phone as long as you use the same phone number. However backups will be automatically deleted after 40 days if you uninstall Allo app.
To download your all chats and media, follow these steps:
-- On your Android phone, open Allo app.
-- Go to Menu and then Settings.
-- Tap Chat.
-- Select an option.
-- Export messages from chats will include only message text and not photos or videos while export stored media from chats will store all your Allo chats including your photos, videos, and other files.
-- Choose where you'd like to store the file. Your messages will be in a CSV file and media attachments will be in a zip file.
-- Once downloaded, go to where you downloaded the file.
