How to check Income Tax refund status?

The Income Tax Department handles various disputes, and issuing a refund is an uncommon phenomenon. Refunds take place only in the case of imperfect calculations by the taxpayer or in some cases, by the Government. Improper/partial filing or paperwork may also lead to discrepancies.

In such cases, the Income Tax or the IT department allows the taxpayer to claim a refund to the excess amount paid. This difference is paid to the taxpayer through a cheque or an electronic transfer, depending on the taxpayer’s method while paying.

It is always advised to keep tabs on the refund status to keep track of the process. It is beneficial when there is an uninformed and an unprecedented delay in the process. Technical glitches or incomplete information can cause a delay in the refund process.

Check the status of an ITR refund:

Visit, the official website of the Income Tax department of India. Click on “Status of tax refunds”, and a message displays the details of your transaction. The details will include the status of a refund, and the reason for delay if any.

You can alternatively visit and log in using your PAN, select the year for which you would like to check the refund status and get the details.

In most cases, the concern of the taxpayer is resolved with the official websites. If the issue remains unsolved, the taxpayer may immediately raise a ticket (service request) on the portal.

What should you do in case of a Delayed refund?

Various actions can be taken for a delayed refund in concern with the reason for the delay.

If the refund status shows as ‘ECS’ (Electronic clearing service), it usually implies issues with the information of the bank details provided.

The taxpayer should then modify the bank details and raise the service request again to re-initiate the process.

Suppose the status mentions that the refund was already initiated through NEFT or NECS but failed to reflect in your transactions. In that case, the taxpayers are advised to recheck the information provided initially.

While filing an ITR, all the details including the name, contact details, bank details and other miscellaneous details provided to the Income Tax department must be accurate and without any discrepancy to ensure a smooth process. This also proves extremely beneficial in such exceptional cases of a refund requisition.
