The SsangYong brand made its debut in India with the Rexton, but that did not take off at all. Hence, the company decided to bury that name in India and instead launch the new Rexton under the Mahindra banner. This makes perfect sense as the Mahindra brand is more popular and the new Rexton, badged as a Mahindra, would sit above the XUV500 as its most expensive and flagship SUV in India.
Mahindra will launch this new SUV on October 19 and here’s what you can look forward to:
First of all, the new Rexton has nothing in common with the earlier model. It is still a body-on-frame, front engine/rear drive layout SUV, but with a completely new design and interior. It is massive though and has presence. The Rexton is 4,850mm long, 1,920mm wide, 1,800mm high, and has a 2,865mm wheelbase.
In terms of design, it has a premium look and cleaner lines. Developed under the project name ‘Y400’ and seen as the ‘LIV-2’ concept at the Paris motor show in September 2016, the Rexton has broad shoulders and chiseled lines. There is a massive grille and even the 20 inch wheels look small on it.
There are bigger changes on the inside. Quality and design have gone up a notch. The interiors feels posh with ample space for seven passengers. There is an 9.20-inch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with device mirroring.
Other features include Auto Closing (doors lock automatically when the key is carried away from the car), dual-zone air-conditioning and a ‘smart tailgate’. The SUV has nine airbags, including a knee-airbag for the driver and side-airbags in the rear.
In terms of engines, the new Y400/ Rexton has a 2.2 litre turbo diesel engine and Mercedes-Benz 7-speed automatic transmission. There is also a petrol variant, but India is unlikely to get that.
So far as pricing goes, we expect the new Rexton/ Y400 to be cheaper than the Fortuner as Mahindra needs to play the pricing game to take the competition head on. We will know more soon.
