Infraprime Logistics Technologies (IPLT) has unveiled the Rhino 5536 electric truck in India. The IPLT Rhino 5536 will be launched in the Indian market in 2020, targeted at the construction and mining industry.
According to IPLT, the Rhino 5536 can be used for short-range hauls in the construction and mining industry. IPLT is a well-known Gurgaon-based fleet services provider. The company is now looking to step into the truck manufacturing and production industry with the Rhino 5536. This is a historic move, given the current state of the truck industry in India.
The electric vehicle industry in India is seeing rapid growth. However, all of the EV growth is happening in the two-wheeler, three-wheeler and four-wheeler industries. There has been a little EV development in the commercial space, but that too was limited to the Light Commercial Vehicle segment.
In Europe, Manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, Volvo & Scania have already brought out electric trucks. The Indian market on the other hand hasn't seen any developments in this area. A few manufacturers like Mahindra, Tata Motors, BYD, Volvo, etc have brought out electric buses in India, but electric trucks are nowhere to be seen.
Keeping all of the above in mind, IPLT is making a landmark move by showcasing the Rhino 5536. Going by the ETAuto video, the IPLT Rhino 5536 seems like it is in the final stages of development and is undergoing road trials before launch.
However, it remained out of the limelight during its developmental phase because of its design. It looks just like a Tata LPT 2518 tractor trailer truck that we are so used to seeing on Indian roads and highways.
The Rhino 5536 appears to be based on the same truck, however there is no confirmation on the same. The IPLT Rhino 5536 is powered by a 276kWh battery that drives an electric motor with a power output of around 483bhp.
The torque output hasn't been specified, but we are sure it would be massive, much more than its diesel counterparts. The high output figures show in its performance. IPLT claims the Rhino 5536 can do a top speed of 90km/h and offers a range between 200-300 kilometres depending on how and under how much load it is driven.
Charging of the huge battery can be completed within 90 minutes if 160kw fast chargers are used. The company had a separate team of engineers developing fast chargers for electric trucks.
IPLT's fast chargers are made using universal standards and can be used to charge other electric trucks as well. Production of the truck is expected to commence in January 2020 at the company's plant located at Faridabad. The company intends to have more than 1,000 trucks plying on Indian roads within the first year. There are no details regarding the pricing, just yet.
Thoughts On IPLT Rhino 5536 Electric Truck Revealed In India
Products like the IPLT Rhino 5536 show how effective the Make In India campaign has been. IPLT is a company that wasn't known in the automotive sector till now.
However, it appears to have completed development of its electric truck for India, faster than most major manufacturers and kudos to the team for that. It is an interesting machine that could revolutionise small and mid-range cargo hauls in India.
