Facelift project has traders worried

Chandni Chowk redevelopment plan gets mixed reactions with traders who feel their business will be affected

The Chandni Chowk Redevelopment Project, which has been on paper for past 14 years, finally commenced on Saturday. The said plan is aimed at solving the problem of traffic jam in Chandni Chowk. Under this plan, the roads will be widened and a separate pedestrian area will be also made. Delhi Jal Board will shift underground groundwater pipelines on both sides of Chandni Chowk road.

However, traffic diversion can cause people problems during the renovation work. Chandni Chowk Redevelopment Project member and President of Chandni Chowk All Trade Division, Sanjay Bhargava said, Under this plan, the central section of the road will be increased to 3.5 meters from Lalkila to Fatehpuri Masjid in Chandni Chowk.

The number of electrical pillars on the central square will be shifted. The carriageway will be constructed 5.5 meter wide for rickshaws on both the sides of the road. Pedestrian area of 13.5 meters will also be constructed on both sides of the road. The BSES is supposed to complete the work by March 31, 2019.

The Delhi Jal Board will start shifting the middle groundwater pipelines on December 15 and are scheduled to complete by April 30. Officers have implemented the Chandni Chowk traffic plan without the consent of the citizens and traders and in the Chandni Chowk, a meeting of prominent citizens, political activists and business leaders of Chandni Chowk will be held at 4 pm on Monday, in protest of this impractical development plan and traffic plan.

Councilor Ravindra Kumar, a former councilor and businessman Suman Kumar Gupta, district BJP general secretary Ajay Bharadwaj and state BJP spokesperson Pravin Shankar Kapoor said that in the last eight to ten years, many similar plans have been created in the name of development in Chandni Chowk.

It is unrealistic and the current plan should be postponed and a discussion should be held with local organisations. After the BJP, Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Chandni Chowk Alka Lamba attacked the BJP saying, BJP is deliberately opposing it. They don't want Chandni Chowk to be developed. There was heavy encroachment on the roads of Chandni Chowk. The old buildings are in shabby condition. And this is what BJP earns. This is the reason why the BJP-backed trade union's protest.
