Employees in Apple office are getting standing desks because sitting is the new cancer
Working with Apple comes with its own share of perks. If being at the centre of innovation wasn't an advantage enough to keep the employees motivated, then its beautiful 175-acre campus in the heart of Santa Clara Valley in California will surely make them reconsider their options. And now Apple employees are getting another perk. All staffers at Apple Park are being issued a standing desk to aid a healthy lifestyle.
Apple is pretty secretive about what goes inside its spaceship-like campus. However, in a rare candid moment Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook revealed this dainty information in a Bloomberg interview with the Carlyle Group's David Rubenstein. "We have given all of our employees, 100%, standing desks. If you can stand for a while, then sit, and so on and so forth, it's much better for your lifestyle," Cook said during the interview.
Interestingly, he even encouraged the billionaire financier and philanthropist to stand with him during the course of the interview, which is similar to a feature available on Apple Watch.
Incidentally, Cook himself seems to be mindful of the health risks posed by prolonged periods of sitting down. In the past, he has even quoted doctors while describing how 'sitting is the new cancer'. "If I sit for too long, it will actually tap me on the wrist to remind me to get up and move, because a lot of doctors think sitting is the new cancer," Cook had said during an interview at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet conference back in 2015.
However, working on a standing desk is only one of the many benefits that Apple employees get at the campus which costed nearly $5 billion to construct. Apple Park has a massive 100,000 square feet fitness centre for Apple employees besides having parklands that offer two miles of walking and running space. The scenic beauty of the campus also includes an orchard, a meadow and a pond-all within the inner grounds of the ring like structure.
In addition to the stunning campus, Apple employees also get an access to furniture that has been carefully selected for the place. The exquisite furniture at Apple Park includes desk chairs by Vitara costing $1,200 (Rs 81,000 approximately) and cafes and common area with tables and chairs designed by Nauto Fukasawa costing $2,500 (Rs 1.69 lakh approximately).
