UAN or Universal Account number for employee's provident fund account came as another step by the EPFO body to render the process easy for subscribers and with it in place there is now one account number for each PF subscriber, irrespective of the number of employers the subscriber changes. So once the EPFO allots the UAN to you, it will be the same for all future employments in companies that are covered under the EPF scheme.And while joining a new job, you just need to provide your UAN to the employer such that the previous balance can be transferred to the new account.
Notably, while the UAN number will remain unchanged, the subscriber will get a unique member ID or EPF account each time he or she changes job and that will be employer-specific.
And if you have been in a job with a company for over some years now and don't know your PF UAN which facilitates a host of PF related services online, you can either ask for it from your employer or retrieve it online by visiting the EPFO's UAN portal.
UAN apart from allowing a PF subscriber to view all current and previous PF account details, enables an individual to transfer or withdraw PF funds online without having to visit the previous employer or going through a cumbersome form filling process.
For the activation of UAN, you need to provide either of the following details:

So, herein when you don't know your UAN, you can either enter your member ID or aadhaar or PAN. Further, you need to give inputs such as your name, date of birth, e-mail id, mobile number and enter the flashing captcha. And after the details are verified, an OTP or one-time password will be sent to the mobile number you provided. Upon entering, the OTP, the EPFO sends across the UAN number along with the password via SMS to the same mobile number.
Furthermore, in a case when you had already activated your UAN previously and fail to remember it, you can click on the tab mentioning 'Know your UAN status' on the UAN portal and not the 'Activate UAN' tab.
