District 9 director Neill Blomkamp has announced that a long-awaited sequel is being written.

Released to universal acclaim 11 years ago, and nominated for four Oscars, this modern sci-fi classic featured Sharlto Copley in the role of Wikus van der Merwe, who ventures into the extraterrestrial slums of Johannesburg and leaves with more than he bargained for.

On Twitter this week, Blomkamp responded to one follower's request that he make a Starship Troopers movie in his "lifetime", simply writing "ok".

However, this interaction seemed to inspire the filmmaker to reveal something even more sensational, as he tweeted: "District 10 screenplay also being written by @sharlto @territatchell and I. Its coming... [sic]".

Please, cinematic Gods, let this finally come to fruition.

This is by no means the first time Blomkamp has mentioned a sequel to District 9.

Back in 2017, he wrote in a Reddit Q&A: "I want to go back to that world and tell the rest of the story with Wikus and Christopher.

"The issue right now is that I have many other projects and ideas that I also want to work on and complete... and most importantly, the exact right REASON to make District 10 needs be very clear," continued the director.

"The first film was based so explicitly on real themes and topics from South Africa that effected me greatly growing up there, that we need to make sure the next film does not forget that."
