The Central Bureau of Direct Tax (CBDT) on Tuesday issued a statement dismissing the claim that it had taken any action against the Durga Puja Committees in Kolkata.
"CBDT rebuts incorrect reports in media about Income Tax notices issued to Durga Puja Committees in Kolkata recently. the reports are factually incorrect and are strongly denied. No notice was issued to the Durga Puja Committee Forum by the Department during this year," the statement said.
Reports of IT notices to Durga Puja Committees had led to a political uproar as the ruling Trinamool Congress claimed that the BJP was trying to stop the Durga Puja celebrations in West Bengal. Whereas, the state BJP accused TMC of laundering black money through Durga Puja.
The IT department, however, clarified that the IT notices sent the puja committees were meant or the records on TDS deducted at source to check for tax payments by vendors and event organisers employed by the committees.
The department said that 30 committees were sent these notices in December last year and a lot of them have duly replied and deposited the TDS deducted at the source. A few committee organisers also attended a special tax orientation session organised by the department as per their request to understand the details, the statement said.
