Bose Sleepbuds review: For a good night's sleep
Sleep is important. But more often than not quality sleep is something that we rarely get. Be it the noisy neighbours or the sound of cars honking at night or your partner snoring right next to you, with endless factors distracting us all the time, a good night's sleep is a rarity. Bose with its Sleepbuds aims to fix this problem.
Bose launched the Sleepbuds in the US last July at a price of $250, the device made its way to India in September for Rs 22,900.
Bose is known for making headphones that stream music and make your favourite songs sound sweet. Sleepbuds is not that kind of headphone. As the name suggests, this product is not about playing the popular songs. They are about helping users sleep. The Sleepbuds are wireless in-ear earpieces that are designed to help you sleep better. They work by drowning the outside noise with a relaxing and soothing music while you sleep.
Now, some of you may not be convinced by the idea of sleeping with your earphones on. It sounds a preposterous. It sounds like we are using technology for the sake of using it. This is not the case, though. I used the Sleepbuds for nearly two weeks and in my time with these sleeping beauties, I found them to be extremely helpful, especially during the hours when the outside noise wouldn't let me drift into the sleepville.
Admittedly, at a price of 23 grands, Sleepbuds are costly, especially since you can not stream music on them. However, with extremely efficient noise-masking capabilities, a long battery life and a comfortable design, Bose Sleepbuds are totally worth splurging for.
Designed for comfort
One thing that you look for in earphones is comfort. This factor becomes particularly important if you are going to wear them all night long while sleeping. The Bose Sleepbuds have been designed keeping this mind and they offer unparalleled comfort even during the most critical hours of the day - the time when you sleep.
The Bose Sleepbuds are made of a rubbery material that is extremely soft and hence ideal to be used while sleeping. On the bottom of the earpieces are earbuds that can be easily adjusted as per the individual requirements, thanks to the slew of earbuds that Bose ships inside the box. And on the top there are tiny winglets that fit inside ears to ensure that the Sleepbuds do not fall out as you twist and turn at night.
The best thing about the Sleepbuds is the degree of comfort that they provide. They are softer than cotton balls and they often vanish inside your ears. They are so soft and comfortable that you won't even notice them inside your ears except during the time when they are actively masking the outside noise.
Another interesting fact about the Sleepbuds is that they not only hide a gigantic battery inside their tiny body but they also hold a decent memory in the same space, which can be used for storing the pre-defined tracks that can be controlled using the Bose Sleep app, which I found to be unusually amazing for earbuds of their size.
The sleepbuds are safely tucked inside a round box that not only holds them during the hours when you are not using them but it also recharges their battery. The metallic charger, which comes in a silver colour, looks somewhat exotic and it slides back to reveal the Sleepbuds that are placed safely inside. It has five LEDs on top which indicate the battery level of the box. The metallic case, and by extension the Sleepbuds, can be charged using a charger that plugs inside the micro-USB port that is placed on the back of the box.
The box looks like a clam, except in this case the electronic clam holds two white coloured Sleepbuds instead of a single pearl.
Sleep like a baby
Sleep is important and there are not many healthy and harmless options available in the market that facilitate a peaceful sleep cycle. The Bose Sleepbuds are an exception as they not only facilitate a healthy sleep cycle but they also come with a 'do no harm' clause.
It's easy to question this statement, especially at a time when we often get the long list of warnings against the use of gadgets during the night time. But there is a catch. Most of these gadgets, like smartphones, constantly emit radiation in the form of wireless signals. However, Sleepbuds don't require you to keep your smartphone in the vicinity for them to continuously transmit music during the night time. Instead, they store the noise masking and relaxing tracks in the memory provided inside the earpieces.
These tracks can be downloaded on to the Sleepbuds using the Bose Sleep app that can not only be used to check the battery status of the individual Sleepbud but can also be used for setting the track that you want to play in your ears while you sleep. Additionally, the app can be used for setting the alarms that will gently nudge you out of the sleep.
Here's another cool things about the Sleepbuds. Just like they prevent outside noise from disturbing your sleep, they also prevent your alarm, or in my case alarms, from disturbing the sleep of people sleeping next to you. You can set multiple alarms, like the regular alarm, using the Bose Sleep that will be audible to just you, leaving people around you unaffected by your schedule.
As far as the noise masking feature of the Sleepbuds is concerned, they are extremely efficient at their job as they effectively block the outside sound by drowning them in relaxing tracks like Campfire, Rustle, Cascade, Rustle and Downstream among others. During the two weeks that I used the Bose Sleepbuds they effectively blocked all the outside sounds, including the ones from cars honking and songs playing at extremely high volume levels at a nearby wedding celebrations. Their effectiveness can be determined from the fact that I couldn't hear a single word that my roommate said while she used her phone and I stood right next to her.
I picked the Campfire sound to play in my ears to lull me into sleep. The sound, apart from killing all the outside noise, also helped me relax and drift into a deep and a peaceful sleep. Often I drifted into such a deep sleep that I even missed the sound of my doorbell that rings everyday at 7am without fail, something that I have never missed earlier. Suffice to say that Sleepbuds are great at what they are designed to do.
If my deep and peaceful sleep weren't enough to impress me then the battery life of these earbuds surely left me amazed. The Bose Sleepbuds come with a long lasting battery that is designed not to give you sleepless nights.
It takes about two and a half hours to juice up the charging case completely. The earbuds charge while you charge the charging case. Once completely charged, the charging case will go without needing the charger for four to five days, depending on your usage. Sleepbuds, on the other hand, get charged automatically when placed inside the charging case.
Should you buy Bose Sleepbuds?
They are expensive but worth it, if you care for your sleep and can spend this money on a gadget. I believe you should spend this much money on a gadget that helps you sleep because a good night's sleep is priceless. Not to forget, India is a noisy place. So anything that helps you cut down on ambient sounds is good.
Bose Sleepbuds are extremely comfortable to use and they will help you enjoy a good night's sleep without an ounce of distraction. The best thing is not only do they reduce distractions for you but they also help people sleeping next to you sleep longer by restricting the sound of your morning alarms in your ears.
They are also particularly beneficial for light sleepers or those who suffer from insomnia and find it difficult to sleep at night.
The only issue with the Sleepbuds I find is with the price. At Rs 22,900, Bose Sleepbuds are expensive. However, if lack of sleep is giving you sleepless nights, then Bose Sleepbuds are an ideal fit for you.
