Doctor Who actress Billie Piper opened up about the challenges of becoming famous as a teenager in the late 90s.

Before starting her career as an actress, she made history in 1998 when she became the youngest female artist to ever debut at the top of the singles charts with her song 'Because We Want To'.

Piper, now 38, was only 15 at the time. Looking back at this period in her life on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, she admits "it seems unbelievably unsafe."

"It felt desperate and lonely," she added.

She went on to credit Chris Evans for helping her cope with the fame: "When I got with Chris I went around the world with him and felt loved. I stopped caring, and that was really integral to me healing and pursuing acting."

The two married in 2001, when Piper was 18 and Evans 35, in a ceremony in Las Vegas after dating for six months.

They separated in 2004 and officially divorced in 2007 but have famously remained good friends.
