Bharti Airtel hikes ISD rates by up to 80%; Idea Cellular by up to 25%

New Delhi: India's largest telecom services provider Bharti Airtel Ltd has raised international call charges by up to 80% this month primarily because of the impact of fall in the value of rupee.

Besides, the country's third largest telecom operator Idea Cellular Ltd has also increased international call rates by up to 25%, as per the company's website.

The standard call charges to countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada have been increased to Rs 8 per minute, from Rs 6.40 per minute earlier, as per the information available on the websites of the two operators.

Bharti Airtel has announced the maximum hike of 80% for calls made for special services in Australia with effect from October 10. The telecom giant has raised the cost of calls for dialling Australia numbers with ISD code 6113 and 6114 to Rs 180 per minute from Rs 100 a minute earlier.

"The strengthening dollar has put tremendous pressure on rate realisation in the ISD segments which Bharti Airtel had been absorbing till now. However, due to the recent steep fluctuations, this cost structure has become unviable resulting in corrections in ISD tariffs," the Press Trust of India quoted an Airtel spokesperson, as saying.

Both the companies have raised the international call rates to most of the countries to Rs 12 per minute from Rs 10, and Rs 17-20 per minute from Rs 15 per minute earlier.

Some of the ISD charges have been increased to Rs 60 per minute from Rs 50 per minute, and to Rs 120 per minute from Rs 100 earlier.
