Apple CEO Tim Cook says high iPhone price is justified because it replaces other gadgets users need
Earlier this month, Apple debuted the successor to its iPhone X at a special event at the Steve Jobs theatre in Cupertino, California. The company introduced three new iPhone models-- iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR- with the top model of the line costing as much as $1,449 or Rs 1,44,900 in India. That pricing makes the newly launched iPhones the priciest smartphone in the market till date. It also places them well above some of Macs by the company. And now days after the launch, Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook has defended the pricing of the new iPhones saying that they are worth it.
Cook, while speaking during an interview at ABC's "Good Morning America" show, said that "it's the most advanced iPhone we've ever done" and that it replaces every other gadget consumers might need. "The phone has replaced your digital camera. You don't have a separate one anymore. It's replaced your video camera. It's replaced your music player. It's replaced all of these different devices," Cook said during the interview as reported by CNBC.
"And so arguably the product is really important. And we've found that people want to have the most innovative product available and with that, it's not cheap to do," he added.
Spending over $1,000 or more might be unthinkable to a lot of users, but Cook justified the cost saying that it only costs users $1 a day. "The way most people pay for these, as it turns out, is they do a deal with a carrier and they pay so much per month. So if you look at even the phone that's priced over $1,000, most people pay about $30 a month for it. So it's about $1 a day," Cook said.
Apple introduced the more affordable variant of iPhone X-- iPhone XR-- which starts at Rs 76,900 (64GB variant) in India. While the 128GB memory variant of iPhone XR is priced at Rs 81,900, the 256GB variant will be available for Rs 91,900 in India starting October 26.
On the other hand, iPhone XS and XS Max start at price of Rs 99,900 and 1,09,900 in India respectively. While the 256GB variant of XS and XS Max is priced at Rs 1,14,900 and 1,24,900 respectively, the 512GB memory variant will be available for Rs 1,34,900 and 1,44,900 in India starting September 28 respectively.
