Anxiety, FOMO among top reasons for smartphone addiction in Indian students
Past couple of years have witnessed the rise of a worrisome trend in India. Surveys conducted by various organisations have shown how smartphones have gone from being a utility to being a necessity. Growth in the smartphone market coupled with reduced mobile data charges have further fueled smartphone addiction among Indians. And now, a new research had shed more light on the smartphone addiction among Indian, particularly the students.
According to a study titled 'Smartphone Dependency, Hedonism and Purchase Behaviour: Implications for Digital India Initiatives' conducted by Aligarh Muslim University and the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), college students in India check their smartphones more than 150 times in a day.
As per the study, anxiety and fear of missing out on information makes the university students in India check their smartphones as many as 150 times in a day on an average. The group interviewed nearly 200 students each from 20 central universities across the country and found out that nearly 63 per cent of the respondents used smartphones for four to seven hours daily while only 13 per cent of those surveyed used their smartphones for three hours or less every day.
The researchers were shocked to find out that nearly 23 per cent students were logging more than eight hours on their smartphones daily. Additionally, only 26 per cent respondents they interviewed said that they used their smartphones primarily for making calls. The remaining respondents used smartphones for non-functional purposes such as accessing social media platforms, searching Google and watching videos and movies on YouTube.
Apart from this, 80 per cent students interviewed in the survey said that they used smartphones owing to the host of features available on it and because it can work as an affordable substitute to a computer.
As mentioned earlier, various studies in the past have highlighted the trend of smartphone addiction among Indians. A survey conducted by B2X Care Solutions back in 2014 revealed that nearly 98 per cent Indians sleep with their smartphones while 83 per cent people keep them within reach throughout the day. Another study conducted by Deloitte in 2015 revealed a similar trend among Indians.
