Amazon India launches automated messaging assistant that speaks Hindi

Amazon India has introduced an automated messaging assistant on its app-based platform that can interact with the users in Hindi. Amazon's automated messaging assistant is essentially a chatbot that is powered by the company's artificial intelligence (AI) based platform. It uses machine learning and natural language processing technologies for answering users' queries in the language of their preference, that is Hindi, without requiring human interference.

Amazon says that the conversations happen inside the messaging window where customers can naturally interact just as they would with a human and the chatbot seamlessly transitions to a human assistant within the same window, whenever necessary.

"When customers interact with the Automated Assistant, it first predicts the most likely issue they are trying to contact us for, post which customers can ask questions related to their issue and receive faster resolutions. By offering the Automated Assistant in Hindi, we are taking a big step towards localizing our post-order experience for Indian customers." Akshay Prabhu, Director, Customer Service, Amazon India said in a statement.

"The new chat assistant in Hindi underlines our commitment to serve the next 100 million Indians to discover and shop with Amazon," he added.

At the moment, Amazon's automated messaging assistant that interacts with users in Hindi is available only in Amazon India's Android app. The company hasn't outlined any plans of introducing a similar feature on to its iOS based. However, with the functionality available in the Android app, it is possible that Amazon India introduces similar functionality on to its iOS based app soon.

It is worth mentioning that a Hindi speaking automated messaging assistant is not the only step that the Indian arm of the Seattle, United States based e-retail giant has taken towards offering localised content to its customers in India. Last September, Amazon India launched the Hindi version of its mobile website and app in India. At the time of the launch, the Hindi platform was available only in the company's Android based app. The company later introduced the same functionality on to its iOS based app in India.
