20 years of Kargil victory: Army soldiers trek to Batra Top, Tiger Hill to commemorate day
As part of celebrations of 20 years of Kargil victory, commemorative treks were organised by 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (JAK RIF) and 18 Grenadiers battalion of the Indian Army to Batra Top and Tiger hill on Sunday.
The objective of the trekking expeditions was to evoke the spirit of patriotism and pay homage to the gallant soldiers and to celebrate the triumph of the Battalion over the enemy.
Many battles define the Kargil War and one such battle which stands out is the battle of Pt 4875. The recapture of Pt 4875 was pivotal during Operation Vijay and 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles had achieved the impossible during this battle.
No one can forget late Captain Vikram Batra who had decimated the enemy through his heroic acts and the famous "Dil Maange More" which had the entire nation fall in admiration of this war icon.
To commemorate the Kargil victory, a trekking expedition to the Batra Top was undertaken by 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. The 13 JAK RIF was also awarded the "Mushkoh & Drass" and the "Kargil" honour.
The trekking team of the 13 JAK RIF was flagged off on July 6, 2019 by Commander Drass Brigade. The team comprising one Junior Commission Officer, ten other ranks moved from Drass and set forth on their trek across the treacherous, harsh mountainous terrain of Drass Sector and summitted the Batra Top on Sunday.

At the summit, the team was received by Lt Gen YK Joshi, General Officer of Commanding Fire and Fury Corps. The general officer was the commanding officer of the battalion at the time of the Kargil War.
The Grenadiers battalion, which also undertook a trekking expedition, moved from Drass and reached Tiger Hill on Sunday. The battalion had played a significant role during the Kargil War.
During the expedition, the trekking team comprising one officer and 15 other ranks, and one veteran Junior Commission Officer aimed to spread the message of "Remember the Fallen" to pay tribute to gallant soldiers of the Kargil war.
"To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Kargil War and as a tribute to all those valiant soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice to the motherland, a trekking expedition was undertaken by the soldiers of 18 Grenadiers with effects from 03 July to 04 July 2019," said an official statement.
During the Kargil War, the troops of 18 Grenadiers had valiantly fought and evicted a well-entrenched enemy, playing havoc on them.
Tiger Hill is symbolic to Operation Vijay and stands tall in the Drass Sector as an epitome of the sacrifice, bravery, and heroism of many unsung heroes who laid their lives in the service of the country.
As a tribute to all the valiant soldiers, a trekking expedition was undertaken by the soldiers of 18 Grenadiers. The trekking team began their journey on July 3 by Commander 56 Mountain Brigade.
