  • High stakes for Trump in vote on healthcare plan

By Roberta Rampton and David Morgan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump may face his first major legislative hurdle on Thursday: a do-or-die vote in the House of Representatives on a plan that would roll back the signature healthcare law of former President Barack Obama.

Trump has been billed by some lawmakers as "the closer" to seal the deal on the replacement healthcare plan in a vote Republican leaders hoped to hold on Thursday, but there were signs late on Wednesday night that the deadline could be pushed back.

It was unclear whether Trump had convinced enough Republicans to back the bill. That uncertainty has rattled financial markets.

Failure to pass the legislation, called the American Health Care Act, would cast doubt on Trump's ability to deliver other parts of his agenda that need the cooperation of the Republican-controlled Congress, including ambitious plans to overhaul the tax code and invest in

  • China's ZTE posts fourth-quarter net loss after U.S. sanction case fine

    By Sijia Jiang

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Chinese telecommunications equipment maker ZTE Corp on Thursday reported a net loss of 5.22 billion yuan ($760 million) in fourth-quarter profit, as it booked a $892 million charge to settle a U.S. sanctions case.

The loss for the three months through December compared with a profit of 1.09 billion yuan in the preceding quarter. Excluding all one-off factors, the loss was 21.5 million yuan versus profit of 479 million yuan.

Revenue rose 24.6 percent to 29.67 billion yuan from three months prior.

ZTE on March 8 agreed to plead guilty and pay the highest penalty among U.S. sanction cases to end an investigation into violations of sanctions against Iran and North Korea. On Thursday, it said the agreement became effective on March 22.

The fine left ZTE posting a 2.36 billion yuan loss for 2016, rather than 3.83 billion yuan in profit, which would have been 19.2

SEOUL/TOKYO (Reuters) - The world's biggest liquefied natural gas (LNG) buyers are clubbing together to secure more flexible supply contracts in a move that further shifts power to buyers rather than producers.

Korea Gas Corp (KOGAS) said on Thursday it had signed a memorandum of understanding in mid-March with Japan's JERA and China National Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC) to exchange information and "cooperate in the joint procurement of LNG."

Japan, China and South Korea are the world's biggest LNG importers, accounting for about 55 percent of global purchases, according to data from energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie.

The countries' biggest respective buyers are joining together to extract concessions from producers that would give them supply flexibility such as having the right to re-sell imports to third parties, something they are not allowed to do under so-called destination restrictions.

European stocks fought for direction on Thursday, with investors cautious of making any big moves amid growing concerns the new U.S. administration will struggle to push through promised pro-business reforms.

The Stoxx Europe 600 index (XSTX:SXXP) traded 0.1% higher at 374.32, but seesawed between small gains and losses.

The index closed down 0.4% to finish at 374.03 on Wednesday, the lowest close since March 14, as the “Trump trade” that has pushed stock markets higher in recent months started to dwindle. This comes as President Donald Trump faces significant issues with getting approval for his health-care, prompting investors to question his ability to follow through on other promises, such as tax cuts and $1 trillion in infrastructure spending.
