Will find way out of Supreme Court verdict: Birla

Mumbai, Feb 14 (IANS) Aditya Birla group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla Tuesday said the Supreme Court's order cancelling 2G licences is unfortunate and his telecom service provider Idea Cellular will find a way out of the tangle.

According to Birla, Idea had applied for these licences in 2006 which were given to them in 2008.

"We were passed over and clubbed with those who were given licences in 2008. Our issue and situation is very different," Birla told reporters on the sidelines of an industry event here.

"The sector, unfortunately, has been mired in controversy but it remains a sector with great potential. We look at the sector with a long term point of view and like other hurdles in the past in the sector I am sure we will find a way out of this hurdle also," he added.

The Supreme Court has ordered cancellation of 122 telecom licences, including nine licences of Idea Cellular, issued in 2008.

Idea Cellular currently has over 106 million subscribers across the country.

Birla refused to comment on the possibility of filing a review petition.

If the Government cancelled the Licences, the Corporates could have gone to the Court. We have to guess what would have been the judgement. But it is now a judgement given by Supreme Court.
